Red Knights International - Executive Secretary and International Chaplain
Bill "Popeye" Snodgrass
I was born March 28, 1946 in Charleston, West Virginia. I am of Scottish and Irish descent. I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April 1963 serving until April 1969 serving as a Boatswain Mate second class. I was a rescue swimmer, diver and assault boat coxswain.
I met my wife, Diane, in 1964 and we were high school sweethearts. We have three daughters, one son and six grand daughters. We enjoy traveling and are involved in many charities.
I have ridden over 300,000 miles on my motorcycle and have ridden in 44 of the states, Canada and Mexico.
My firefighting career began as a volunteer with the Cross Lanes Volunteer Fire Department. I then join the Jackson Township Fire Department as a volunteer and move up the ranks to the position of Battalion Chief until I retired in October 1999. In addition, I served as the OIC of the Special Investigation Unit for the fire department as well as a shift commander. During this time, I was also a private Fire Investigator for the insurance industrial, investigating over 3500 fires.
I became aware of the Red Knights in 1993 and was the founding father for Ohio 5, which was formed in 1994. We hosted the International Convention in Columbus in 1995, setting an attendance record at that time. I have served in all chairs at the local level.
I was elected as the Ohio State Representative and served until 2004 when I was elected as the International Secretary. During my terms as Ohio State Representative, the Ohio Association was form. This was the beginning of the International Association program. The Ohio Association was the first Association to host the International Convention, doing so in 2008, setting an attendance record.
I am in my third term as the International Secretary and am proud of the accomplishments that have been made to better the members of our club during that time. In 2000, we have 69 chapters. Eight years later, we now have over 300 chapters.
I want to thank the membership for supporting me as your International Secretary and the members (present and pass) of the International Executive board that I have been honored to work with.
I have been asked where I got my nickname. It would be easy to say it was because I was in the Navy or because I like spinach, but the true is that it was given to me because like Popeye....."I yam what I yam".
